Nov. 20, 2008

It was a long night with Jake last night. He decided he was hungry and at 12:00 midnight he requested a grilled cheese sandwich. I didn't make it crispy enough the first time, so I had to take it back to the stove and cook it a little longer. At 2:00 a.m. he asked for an apple. At 4:30 a.m. he said my snoring was keeping him awake so I moved to the couch in the living room. I am glad he ate as this is the answer to many prayers, but does he have to do it in the middle of the night?! What's funny though is that this is so "Jake." He has always been a demanding child and a night owl, so why did I think it would be different just because he has cancer. We are trying to keep a sense of humor in all of this. It may be hard to understand that, but it helps. Jake had another radiation treatment today. They don't seem to be helping as he seems to be regressing a little each day, but I'm pretty sure he would be much worse if he wasn't having the treatments. After radiation, he and Johnny went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to buy a few more towels for our house as Jake says the ones we have are too small and too thin. He and Johnny also went to McDonalds for a shake. Jake ordered chocolate but didn't like the taste so he ended up drinking Johnny's vanilla shake. One of Jake's best friends, Kevin, came by today and took Jake to Ryan's house where Jake was living before he moved in with us to pick up some more of his things such as DVDs and clothes. While Jake was with Kevin, Johnny was able to go to his office to drop off some paperwork and pick up more paperwork. Late in the afternoon, Jake decided to try and lay on an air mattress in the living room to watch TV. It seemed to help for awhile, but then he went back to his bedroom. Thank you so much to Joann and Terri who brought us Chicken Express for dinner. What a nice surprise! It is one of Jake's favorite foods and he ate a biscuit and some mashed potatoes. Jake is now in bed and hopefully he will sleep better tonight.
Thank you for all your positive responses to the blog and thank you to those of you who forwarded it on to others. It is nice to hear from people we have not heard from in awhile. Thank you for understanding that it is easier to write one blog than to talk to many people on the phone. We know you are all out there praying.
Here we go again. Jake is asking for one of his favorite foods, "Easy Mac." Having it at 11:20 p.m. is also so "Jake." It's nice to know that Jake hasn't really changed on the inside.

Thank you for all your emails and blog responses. We love you all very much.
Please keep praying.

Thanksgiving is a time of quiet reflection of the past and an annual reminder that God has been ever so faithful. The simple things of life are brought into focus so much that everything else fades into insignificance.

I'm so glad Jake is 'Jake'. I love you all so much. I pray for you daily.
